Venice is unlike anywhere on the planet. The sight of a city balancing on water takes your breath away, so does the incredible history, bridges and architecture. Maybe it’s all that glorious history and art and architecture, but the Italians seem to believe they have contributed enough to the world and noe can relax and can take the day off. Or days off, as the case may be. A few hours before I was to board the train at Venice’s Santa Lucia station to head for Rome, the Italian railway network decided to stage a lightening strike.

They say lightening never strike twice but that clearly doesn’t apply to Italy. As a gesture of public transport solidarity, the Vaporretos or water buses, the only way to get around Venice, stopped operating as well. Even the famed gondoliers downed oars. Short of doing a Jesus and walking on water, I was literally up the creek without the paddle. History is imprinted on every wall of this city which was conquered by Napoleon, merged into Austria-Hungary, and ping ponged between Austria and a nascent Italy. Venice is still a monument to the glory days of the Renaissance, and historical culture still throbs powerfully in its veins, which are the canals.
